At one time I adding tracking code and such to the header or footer of my WordPress sites. You do that by going to Appearance in your dashboard, then edit, click on which file it is you want to edit in your theme. Like this:
Plugins are a smarter way to make these changes. At one time I did add a bit of code, edited my themes a lot. Issue is what if you change your theme? or upgrade your theme? Your additions to the header or footer may be lost. And quite possibly you forgot what code it was. Just one day later or even weeks or months, you notice something isn’t working like it once did.
When that code is in a plugin, themes, etc can be updated and the code is still there. Another solution is to create a child theme. Plugins are an easier solution.
Here is a link to the plugin WP-CopyProtect. I believe it will do what you want. And thanks for a great question!
