What Are the Signs of Diseased Trees?

Although most homeowners have trees in their property, only a few know much about the diseases that attack trees. Most do not know the signs to look for and therefore, risk losing the trees to certain diseases.

When a tree is infested, you need tree disease treatment services in Utah County to revert the condition. But first things first, have a look at the common symptoms of diseased trees.

Seeping Fluid

Trees contain fluid that helps in the distribution of nutrients in its system. The fluid is usually within the tree system and should not be visible on the exterior. This fluid, however, could seep through the bark or around the tree’s base. The fluid is similar to a slime flux and contains an odor. As it trickles down, the fluid leaves a dark streak.

Growths on the Tree

Fungi affect the health of trees and ultimately damage the tree structure. An example of a fungus is the Fomes fomentarius, which attacks most trees. The fungus is hard in texture and has the shape of a hoof. The lower side of the fungus is covered with white pores, which continue to reproduce. The growth increases in size and affects a large section of the tree.

Powdery Mildew

When there is high humidity, you may notice the appearance of mildew on leaves. The mildew is usually powdery and white. This often develops in later seasons and causes stunted growth in plants. The mildew may start as small spots and eventually cover the entire surface of leaves. The early you detect the mildew, the easier it is to control the condition and save your tree.

Discolored Leaves

When a tree has stunted growth and discolored leaves, it is an indication of a condition known as armillaria root rot. This condition affects the roots, and you may notice wilting and dying of the branches on the tree. The disease comes about when the soil has fungi infection, which attacks the roots. The tree may take a while longer to eventually die if it is receiving sufficient nutrients from the soil.

Black Flowers and Shoots

Fire blight is another condition that affects trees usually characterized by dark flowers and shoots. Fire blight is a bacterial infection that spreads in the plant very fast. It, however, takes weeks before the condition can manifest on the plant. A clear sign of this condition is bent flowers and shoots.

Peeling Bark

The bark of a tree acts as the “skin” of the plant and protects the tree from harmful substances in its environment. When the bark begins to peel, it exposes the plant to the environment and therefore puts it at risk. Trees with a peeling bark risk losing essential nutrients, which are important for a healthy growth.

Once you see any of these signs in your trees, consider calling a tree service provider as soon as you can. The earlier you notice the sign and get tree disease treatment, the higher the chances of rescuing your tree from further damage and death. Tree care service providers understand the right treatment for different conditions and will save the trees in your property.
